History
Ray Vallero started working on cars at t he age of 17. With a passion for cars and a thirst for knowledge he soon was being sent to all of the schools that Neillo VW had to offer. He quickly moved up through the ranks of the repair industry to heavy engine overhauls. He applied for and received his first smog license in 1965. His favorite reading materials were Motors Manuals and he could often be found studying even on his lunch hour or spare time. He worked many long hours re-upholstering vehicle interiors to pay for his first pieces of machinery. And with that humble start he kept purchasing equipment piece by piece until he had the makings of a machine shop.

Ray's first street rod was a 1951 Chevy Club Coupe with a Chrysler Hemi with 2-4's. It was a tire boiling street rod. After many invitations from the local police department he decided to pull the Hemi and install it in an altered with fuel injection and take it to the drag strip.

He opened R&S Machine Shop here in Auburn in 1976 with his partner Sandy Braden. In 1979 he dissolved his partnership with Sandy and went to work for Bart Finning (formerly Placer Motor Parts). In 1981 he opened Vallero's VW Werks with his two children, Ray Jr. & Lynda and his former wife Peggy. He quickly discovered that his children needed more of a challenge and they all started working on all makes and models. They raced many VW bugs over the years and Ray raced a 1966 drag 912 Porsche with a VW engine to a 10:98 @ 121.30 MPR.

Current Affairs
Ray is currently reconnecting with his Hemi past, building a 354 Hemi for his 1956 Chrysler, which may produce a puff or two from the rear tires. With the last Hemi project being Marty's, his wife's 1955 Desoto, completed in 1996 it is time for the next Vallero Hemi. Ray and Marty also love traveling in their vintage 1971 Apollo motorhome, with their dog, Fresca and new cat, Bandit.
